The Buffalo Trail Council serves 18 counties in West Texas, including the cities of Midland, Odessa, Big Spring, Andrews, Pecos, Alpine, and Fort Davis.
Like other councils within Scouting America, the Buffalo Trail Council delivers traditional Scouting programs through chartered organizations such as churches, civic groups, and schools. Local volunteers lead units, while the council supports them through professional staff and volunteer committees.
Traditional age-based Scouting programs within the council include:
- Cub Scouting (K-5th grade)
- Scouts BSA (ages 11-17)
- Venturing (ages 14-20)
These programs continue the long tradition of character development, citizenship training, and outdoor skills that have been the hallmarks of West Texas Scouting since the 1910s.
To implement these programs, the Buffalo Trail Council operates two camps: the Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch (BTSR) in the Davis Mountains and Camp Thomas in Big Spring. BTSR offers summer camping and high adventure opportunities, such as cavalcades, treks, and scuba programs. Camp Thomas offers weekend camping options.
